The release of ‘The Artist’ has seen the movie world harkens back to a by gone age, many would call it a simpler time but I’m not sure that’s entirely fair.

The Artist is the slightly meta tale of a silent movie actor during the last days of the silent film, as the talkies steadily began to take over. The meta bit comes from the fact that the film is a silent movie itself, shot using the same techniques and style which populated the original works.

The movie is excellent, witty and genuinely heart-warming, but the truly arresting aspect of it is that it makes ...

David Cameron has ‘Armageddon’ in his DVD collection*. Now whatever your views on his politics, everyone must be united in the view that the bloke knows bugger all about films.

That’s why his recent comments about the British film industry are all the more shocking. Like ‘Armageddon’, Cameron’s comments are ill thought out, silly, scientifically inaccurate and contain far too much Ben Affleck.

Okay the P.M may not have mentioned Ben Affleck at all, but he had Affleck on his mind, you can tell by his eyes and from what he had to say. Cameron believ ...

Motion Capture

Andy Serkis is lobbying for an Oscar nomination for playing a monkey. Industry insiders don't rate his chances however, not due to the fact that he's portraying an ape but because his performance uses motion capture.

Motion Capture or performance capture, as many actors prefer it to be called, is the process in which a poor cast member is forced into a very tight and a slightly unbecoming green spandex suit covered in tiny cameras and 'dots' (to use their technical term). These cameras capture every facial expression and movement of the actor, which are then conver ...

Remakes - I'm Going To Try And Defend Them.

Film fans and wannabe gangsters were up in arms yesterday with the news that a remake of ‘Scarface’ is being planned. How the flipping heck are they going to top Al Pacino going loco in a very nice white suit? Well the answer is they’re probably not. But that won’t stop them trying, bless them.

There was outcry and then everybody remembered that the Pacino/De Palma ‘Scarface’ is itself a remake of Howard Hughes’ ‘Scarface’ of 1932. Both versions are good (not much can beat Pacino going absolutely crackers with a chainsaw though) and ...

Reels In Motion For 7 Years!

Reels In Motion turned 7 this week! Like most 7 year olds on their birthdays; the team have been running around, drinking far too many fizzy drinks and throwing the odd tantrum. (The tantrum came about due to a distinct lack of any birthday cake – a serious breach of contract which will be brought up in the next board meeting)

With the company celebrating 7 long, happy, years in business this week I think this presents the perfect opportunity to take a step back and evaluate what exactly has happened.

Reels was formed in 2004 by a trio of rogue graduates who shared a dream, a ...

Trailers (This Isn't About Caravans.)

This week’s blog is on the subject of movie trailers, why? No reason.

A film can live or die in the one and half minutes you spend watching its trailer on Youtube, consequently trailer making has become a huge business. There are production companies whose sole work is the creation of successful trailers.

Trailers serve to give a flavour of a coming film, in many ways they’re like that mouth-watering scent of baked bread that ‘Subway’ pumps out onto the street as you walk past. (Like many Subs, sometimes the actual films they promote are overly cheesy and lea ...

IMDB - Help The Aged.

The Internet Movie Database has well and truly put the panther amongst the hawks by revealing an actress’ true age.

When the thesp signed up to IMDB’s pro service, she was required to give her date of birth. IMDB then went and revealed the big number on her profile.

She is now suing Amazon, who own IMDB (presumably they bought it on Ebay), for more than $1 Million, claiming that revealing her actual age could lead to her missing out on acting jobs. The actress has so far remained unnamed but this blogger believes it to be Anne Hathaway, she may look young but she has the ...

Is Twitter Really That Useful To Business?

Twitter has so now so firmly established itself into everyday life or ‘the zeitgeist’ (good word) that businesses feel that they have to have a presence on Twitter. With the majority of businesses feeling that Twitter is a requisite for success, whether Twitter is useful to business is a bit of a moot point. Until a huge conglomerate like Apple or indeed Twitter (does twitter have a twitter? Whoa metaphysical) stops using twitter, everyone else has to follow suit. Besides, the amount of time and effort it takes to maintain an account is so small, what do you really stand to lose ...

The Beeb is moving the majority of its production t’up North to Manchester, in a location change which has proved somewhat controversial. London has long been considered the hub of all things media related in the country, with the old smoke drawing actors and filmmakers to it like a magnet to a bigger, more powerful, magnet. In recent years its sway has lessoned somewhat however, with BBC steadily ceding productions to other areas. The massive success of BBC Wales in creating some of the most popular programming on The Beeb is a clear indication of this.

Youtube now takes up so much procrastination time that there are people whose job it is to discover the latest ridiculous videos. The reasons for Youtube’s rise are numerous, the viral nature of video sharing and the ease in which any user with nothing but a webcam can upload a video and release their cinematic vision upon the unsuspecting public. Movie trailers and music videos are now also debuting on Youtube first and recently a ‘Youtube mashup’ video found its way into the UK top 40. Such is Youtube’s growth that it has begun to evolve into a more all encompassin ...
