The Unrelenting Growth of Youtube.

Youtube now takes up so much procrastination time that there are people whose job it is to discover the latest ridiculous videos. The reasons for Youtube’s rise are numerous, the viral nature of video sharing and the ease in which any user with nothing but a webcam can upload a video and release their cinematic vision upon the unsuspecting public. Movie trailers and music videos are now also debuting on Youtube first and recently a ‘Youtube mashup’ video found its way into the UK top 40. Such is Youtube’s growth that it has begun to evolve into a more all encompassing video empire, resulting in a far greater range of content available.
Aside from music and comedy, marketing is playing an ever increasing role on the site. This means that the door has been thrown open for a corporate invasion too, while the ratio of videos featuring people injuring themselves to videos of health and safety remains tipped towards the former, practical applications through Youtube are on the up. Companies are increasingly posting content, through hosting videos on their own websites and creating dedicating channels. Posting videos on Youtube puts your work, whatever it is, out into the public domain. There is always the chance that someone with far too much time on their hands, searching for videos of sneezing pandas, might suddenly remember that company they’ve heard about and type the name into the Youtube searchbar.
Youtube represents an extremely valuable platform, everyone can access it, everyone is already using it and it’s free. It’s still mainly about videos of funny cats though.
